Winking Manicure

MAC Hyperion // Kiss Brush On Nail Art Paint in White, Black and Blue Print

TGIF, friends. What a week! And after two extremely busy weeks, my mother is coming to town…and staying in my apartment…tonight. Of course, I still have a million things to do between now and then, so I’m going to keep this super short. I’m obsessed with this manicure. It’s a combination my new favorite clutch and a nail art design I particularly loved, and the result is definitely one of my all time favorite manicures I’ve done to date. It’s whimsical and fun without being overly cutesy. What do you think of this winking manicure?

Pink With A Wink

I love these pieces together, but I was not a fan of the all pink look when my hair was pink. It could work at just the right moment as the color faded, but I never quite caught it. So when I lightened my hair to white, I immediately thought of this outfit…and these shoes. And when it came to accessories, I quickly grabbed this playful clutch and a statement necklace that just so happens to match my shoes. Does that combination look familiar? Yup, you saw it here last week. Sorry I’m not sorry – I love it!

Well friends, as it turns out August is kicking my ass. Spare time is precious and I can’t bring myself to dedicate it to outfit photos or even more time on the computer. Instead I squeeze in extra time with my boyfriend…or sleep. Last week was a blur, and I spent most of it in outfits like this one. (Let’s just say you didn’t miss much). But when the weekend rolled around, I promised myself I’d give the boyfriend jeans a rest. Of course, after an extra busy week, I felt lazy and just wanted to wear jeans and a tee. I allowed myself the tee but rather than jeans, I paired it with a long silk skirt. This skirt is surprisingly easy, and since it works just as well with polished looks as it does a t-shirt or sweatshirt, I find myself wearing it to work as often as I do on the weekend. To finish it off, I added my favorite ankle booties and colorful accessories.

A Sweatshirt And A Collar

I'm pretty sure I'm going to be banned from fashion blogging when I say this, but there are days when I just don't have the appetite for dreaming up interesting outfits. It could be the result of rather uninspiring weather - hello, summer in San Fran! – or maybe a trip to the dry cleaner is long overdue. But most of the time, it’s the result of exhaustion. As many of my friends joke, I have a "big girl job" and while awesome, it's also demanding and challenging, and there are days when I'm just exhausted. Sometimes I pick myself up with fashion. Other times I pick out a pair of boyfriend jeans and a sweatshirt. And though this may not be one of my most interesting outfits, I do love this look in that it’s so very me. What can I say? I’m a sucker for good, comfortable pieces. Throw in a collar, and I’m a happy girl.

Bows And A Wink

I bought these shoes a few months ago and let them sit in my closet for far too long. It was one of those situations when I wanted to wait for the perfect outfit to debut them, but I also had no idea what that perfect outfit looked like. Then I woke up one morning and decided I could wait no longer. Fuck perfection. I just wanted to wear the shoes! And so I pulled them out of the box in which they came, put them on my feet and stared into my closet. I debated pairing the adorable bows and whimsical lucite heels with equally sweet dresses, but that didn’t feel right. Instead I put together a look that’s ladylike and chic but with a touch of edginess thanks to faux leather pleats and a winking clutch. In the end, I think this was the perfect outfit to debut these shoes. Maybe all I needed was a little pressure?

Leopard Manicure

OPI Need Sunglasses? // American Apparel The Valley // Sally Hansen Mint Sorbet

Phew, it was another crazy week! I planned to post a few more outfits, but somehow the week got away from me. But, it’s Friday and I’m happy to share my latest manicure after spending last week with bare nails. (It was a rough week.) I hadn’t done a leopard print design in ages and was inspired by a yellow and teal one I spotted – no pun intended - on Instagram. This yellow is a little too much for on its own, but it served as a perfect base for this manicure. I then used two colors for the spots to create a subtle gradient. I love how this one turned out. What do you think?

Oh, hi. It’s been a while, hasn’t it? Sorry to just drop off like that, but I got hit with a killer cold…during an already tough week at work. These photos were taken on the last day that I tried to fight it. After this, it was all oversized sweaters and skinnies. Bare nails. Yes, friends, it was not my finest hour. The best I could do was a Canadian tuxedo. I debated sharing these photos, but in the end I wanted to share my new hair color as I’ve had it for over a week! It was tough to say goodbye to pink, but it was definitely more of a “see you later” as I know I’ll go back to it at some point. But after a year – a year! – of pink hair, I craved a change. As usual I felt indecisive; I considered lavender and blue (both a pale shade and a dark, grungy blue), but in the end I went with white. It might sound ridiculous, but much like some people feel they were born the wrong gender, I feel I was born with the wrong hair color. White feels the most natural to me. Going back to it always feels comfortable, and I know I’m going to like it. It feels good to be back to white!

Comfortable

When it comes to this outfit, I have just one word: comfortable. And there are some days when there is just no other option. You know when work is kicking your ass, and you don’t get enough sleep and there’s not enough concealer in the world to make you look refreshed? Well, it was one of those days. When I saw this sweatshirt dress, I thought, “done!” Then I looked at the weather report and realized there was no way I was walking out of the apartment in a dress. I quickly grabbed my new skinnies, because, really, a girl can never go wrong with stripes and skinnies. To finish it off, I added a bag that I’ve neglected for far too long and gold accessories, including this pretty necklace from the kind people at INPINK. Aren’t the metal tubes rad? A coworker of mine commented that it’s almost like a macaroni necklace children make for their moms…but way more badass.

R29 Nail Art Nation: The Lost Designs

| |

Remember that Refinery29 and Revlon Nail Art Nation contest? Well, I didn’t win. Actually, I didn’t make it past the first round. But as I said before, just making it that far made me feel like a winner! And, the fact that my friend Adiel was a finalist, too, made it that much better!

There were five design challenges, all of which had to be created using the haul of Revlon polish they sent my way. Since only one of my designs was featured, I thought I’d share the rest here on the blog. I’d love to hear which you like best!

The Challenge: Summer Florals
For an unexpected floral design, I went for slightly off kilter flowers inspired by Marimekko floral prints. In bright purple and lavender, this manicure is for no shrinking violet!

The Challenge: White Hot Neon
For a day (read: office) appropriate white-hot neon manicure, I started with a clean white base. Then, using three complimentary neon colors, I created a playful dot gradient.

The Challenge: Black Tie
For a black tie appropriate manicure, I created a modern design using a classic color combination – black and white. The matte black feels fresh, and the pearly white appears almost metallic against it. No special night is complete without a little sparkle, so I finished it off with two shades of glitter.
