Black And White Manicure

| |

Revlon Nail Art Expressionist Night and Degas
I’ve been into black and white manicures lately, and after a few weeks of colorful designs, I decided it was time for another. I didn’t really plan this design; I just had a general idea of what I wanted to do. In retrospect, I wish I planned it out and I wish I went with thinner lines. That said, I received many compliments on this one, so once again, I am my harshest critic.

I have a love/hate relationship with mismatch manicures. The inconsistency is both infuriating and attractive. Infuriating because I like things to be perfect and there’s something inherently imperfect about a mishmash of different designs. But the lack of consistency also makes the manicure a bit easier. An identical design isn’t applied to each nail, so imperfections are less obvious.  What do you think of mismatch manicures?

Spots And Neon

Dress: Rachel Zoe (Nordstrom Rack)
Boots: Kurt Geiger
Bracelets: Marc by Marc Jacobs (Nordstrom) and Juicy Couture
Watch: Michael Kors (Nordstrom)
Bag: Marc by Marc Jacobs (a gift)

“Today is going to be a shit show, so I’m going to put on a pretty dress.” Yes, that’s exactly what I said to my boyfriend as I slipped on this dress. I picked it up the weekend before, and I couldn’t wait to wear it. Of course, I had to wait for the weather to warm up enough to allow me to go without tights, which it luckily did just as my week hit a low point. The print was what first caught my eye, but when I tried it on I found that it fit like a dream. Since my back is still bothering me, I had to go with a low heel and my cap toe booties added a little edge to the feminine shape of the dress. When it came to accessories I stuck to the color of the dress but added a few pops of neon pink. It’s amazing what a cute dress can do for a girl’s mood!

Glitter Fishtail Manicure

American Apparel The Valley // Revlon Nail Art Moon Candy Galactic

As I briefly mentioned in this post, I had the honor of being selected as a contestant in Refinery29 and Revlon’s nail art contest. To kick it off, they sent me a box of Revlon polish. Win or lose, I already felt like a winner receiving her prize! Included in the haul was a particular duo – Galactic – that had actually caught my eye many times in Target. A deep blue and an ice like glitter was a combination I couldn’t resist for too long once it was in my possession. I usually start with a design and then select colors, but this time I needed to select a design that would work with the colors. I quickly decided on a fishtail manicure. I’ve never started with a glittery base, but I kinda love it. I think it would be fun with a more intricate design layered over it - maybe a leopard or floral? That said, this glitter is quite chunky, and it made applying smooth lines difficult. Next time I’ll use a finer glitter as a base, but I do love this glitter. The photo doesn’t capture the shimmer; it’s like my nails are glowing.

June Gloom

Ah summer is here. And since "here" is San Francisco that means it's been cool, windy and foggy. Sure the temperate climate of this city is great in January. But the same temperature plus fog in June (and July and August)? Not that cool. Waking up to gloomy weather on a Monday can definitely put a girl in a sour mood. And that lead me straight to black skinnies and my favorite boots. Not quite willing to resign myself to a look as bleak as the weather, I decided on this tie dye button down to brighten it up a bit. And, yes, I’m wearing my new bag again. While the geometric print may be an unexpected compliment to tie dye, there’s something about it that I like. And, well, I do love the bag.

All About The Bag

So, I injured my back a few weekends ago. And by “injured” I mean that I sat down to brunch feeling completely fine but stood up to intense back pain. Since then my nights have included a heating pad and laying on the hardwood floor in my living room. It sucks. What makes it suck even more is that I can’t justify wearing heels, and that has seriously cramped my style. In constant pain and suffering from lack of sleep, it’s fair to say I was a little sour. But when Friday rolled around, I was determined to end the week on a high note even if I wasn’t quite feeling myself. And there was only one option – my new bag. I am obsessed with this bag, and I knew wearing it guaranteed a good day. And, yes friends, it worked. This bag is magic!

Harem Pants And Heels

Shirt: Something Else by Natalie Wood (Mira Mira)
Pants: Theory (Nordstrom Rack)
Shoes: Nine West
Necklace: Sheila B Jewelry (Mira Mira)
Bracelet: Gilt
Bag: Marc Jacobs (Nordstrom)

The response to what I’m wearing is always surprising to me. I get my fair share of smirks and giggles, stares and, yes, sometimes, glares. There are days when I am obsessed with my outfit, and not one person acknowledges any part of it in any way. And there are days when I'm not quite pleased with my outfit but everyone else seems to love it. This day fell into the latter, and you know what? I was showered with compliments. Yes, an outfit born from exhaustion and the desire to wear pajamas was one of my biggest hits at the office. Who would’ve guessed it?

I’ve not worn these harem pants in ages. In fact, I’m actually surprised they’ve made it through the purge that inevitably precedes every move, of which there have been several since I bought them. That said, when I saw them on this day, it was like there were no other pants in my closet. To stay with the comfortable but work appropriate them, I paired them with a sheer top, black pointed toe heels and a classic red bag.

Life Lately

| |

Just a quick update today, friends! Life has been crazy, and I haven’t had as much time to dedicate to blogging as I’d like. And now it’s Monday. I don’t know about you, but I’m not ready for it. I need (at least) one more day!

I finally brought my favorite boots in for repair, and they haven't left my feet since I picked them up.
I was equally flattered and shocked to find that I'm a finalist in the Revlon and Refinery29
nail art contest!
A quick snap of the flying books on a recent trip to North Beach.
A recent gift to myself - I'm in love!
When it's 80 degrees and sunny in SF, there's only one thing to do: find a bar with
a patio and eat totchos (tater tot nachos). Yes, you read that correctly.

The Perfect Pink Coat

Coat: See by Chloe (Gilt Warehouse Sale)
Shirt: J.Crew
Jeans: Rich & Skinny (Nordstrom)
Shoes: Kurt Geiger
Necklaces: Monserat de Lucca (ModCloth) and Sheila B Jewelry (Mira Mira)
Watch: Michael Kors (Nordstrom)
Bag: Marc by Marc Jacobs

When I spied this coat at the Gilt warehouse sale, I crossed my fingers that it was my size. It was. And, when I tried it on and realized it was almost the same color as my hair, I knew it had to be mine. Most of my coats are neutral colors, so this pop of color is a welcomed addition to my closet even after my hair color changes. (No plans yet, but it will inevitably change.) Not too mention that it’s rarely too warm for a coat in San Francisco. A fabulous coat can pull together even the most blah outfits, and I see myself wearing this to work just as much as running errands. And it matches my hair.

Long Weekend Style

As I lamented in my last outfit post, I’ve been feeling uninspired when it comes time to get dressed. What used to be one of my favorite parts of the day has become stressful and often disappointing. Dressing for the office has its constraints, so when a long weekend rolled around, I told myself to simply have fun with it. That’s what fashion is all about anyhow, right? I immediately grabbed these mint green pants, which combined with my pink hair make me giggle. Last time I wore them I went all out prep, so this time I wanted to go in a different direction, something more casual cool for a lunch date involving tacos and margaritas. I think I achieved that with a cheeky tee, leather jacket, and Chanel flats. Though the leather jacket was key to adding a little edge, but it was so warm that I ended up going without it. Not that I’m complaining!
