Sweet Enough For A Bridal Shower, Too Short For The Bus

Dress: Nishe (ModCloth)
Shoes: Seychelles (ModCloth)
Bracelets: Anthropologie and BCBG Max Azria
Ring: Betsey Johnson
Bag: See by Chloe (Nordstrom)

When I received the first bridal shower invitation of my adult life, the first thought that came to mind was: what the hell am I going to wear? So, when I saw the bride to be, Adiel, just a few days before the shower, I asked her what I should wear. Of course, Adiel is far too sweet to actually tell me what to wear, so I prodded her until she finally gave me something I could work with – a collar. When I looked into my closet and spied this dress, I knew exactly what I would wear. I’ve had this dress for a while but hadn’t quite found an occasion to wear it. This dress is a bit sugary with heart buttons on the collar and a scalloped hem, but the short hemline keeps it from being too much so. Speaking of that hemline, I quickly snapped these photos on my way to the bus stop, and as soon as I got on the bus, I knew I should have taken a cab. Some dresses are just too short for the bus! Sitting means way too much bare skin touching the seat. Standing, which is often my preference, requires reaching up (bringing the hemline up, as well) to hold on. Not to mention for the early Sunday morning bus crowd, this was quite a bit of leg!

And, the shower was too much fun not to share a few pics I snapped on my phone throughout the day!

Neutral And Neon

Sweater: Something Else by Natalie Wood (Mira Mira)
Tank: Michael Stars (Nordstrom)
Skirt: Vince Camuto (Nordstrom)
Shoes: Same Edelman (Piperlime)
Necklaces: Marc by Marc Jacobs and H&M
Ring: Surface To Air (Shotwell)
Bag: Rebecca Minkoff
Sunglasses: A gift from Angie

Just as I had given up hope for bare legs, San Francisco surprises me with a weekend of beautiful weather. Still nothing like a heat wave, a sunny, 75 degree day was a significant improvement from 60 degrees and foggy. Of course, the weather here depends entirely on one’s exact location, and since I planned to run errands all over the place, I wore layers and a skirt long enough to ensure that I didn’t spend the day holding it down to fight against the wind.

I forgot how much I love this skirt. I had foolishly written it off as a fall and winter staple (for reasons I now cannot recall) and therefore tucked it away in the very back of my rather packed closet. The neutral color begged for something neon, and this sweater is definitely one of my favorite neon pieces. When I left the house, I felt like something was missing…luckily, I picked up this neon yellow necklace while out and put it on immediately, completing the outfit.

A Classic Combination

Dress: Burberry (Nordstrom)
Tights: c/o Falke
Shoes: Pour La Victoire
Headband: Nordstrom
Bracelet: Juicy Couture
Rings: Surface To Air (Shotwell) and Marc by Marc Jacobs
Bag: L.A.M.B. (Nordstrom Rack)

Yup, tights. I know I just said I wouldn’t wear them on principle of it being July and all, but a girl can only wear pants so many days in a row. Sure, I see brave girls in San Francisco rocking skirts without tights all year round; it definitely can be done. I just cannot do it. I hate being cold. Really hate it. (Remember that living in Mexico thing?) Exposing a little skin, this pair seemed a bit lighter than black tights and made me feel a little better about wearing them in July. Settling on houndstooth tights lead straight to this dress. A Burberry shirtdress felt like an appropriate compliment to such a classic print.

Floral (And Foolproof) Pants

Shirt: American Apparel
Tank: Banana Republic
Pants: Elevenses (Anthropologie)
Shoes: Libby Edelman (Piperlime)
Rings: Marc by Marc Jacobs and Surface To Air (Shotwell)
Bag: Marc Jacobs (Nordstrom)

Ah, another chilly, foggy morning… While I tried to maintain some semblance of summer with the outfits worn on the preceding foggy mornings, by this day I had lost motivation and was a bit frustrated with San Francisco’s so-called “summer” weather. Feeling a bit grumpy, I thought about wearing a frilly dress to chase my foggy morning blues away, but I just couldn’t bring myself to wear tights. Then I spied these pants, and the floral print made me feel like I could turn my mood around. But just in case they couldn’t, I was sure to wear enough black to placate my crankiness in case it stuck around…which it didn’t. These pants never fail me.

Easy Tribal Manicure

Essie Mesmorized // American Apparel Gold Flash
Ever since the onset of my nail art obsession, a tribal design has been on my to-do list. It was one of the first designs that piqued my interest, and while I love tribal designs, all those straight lines intimidate me. But, much like with anything else, I’ve become much more confident in my nail painting ability so I’m a bit more daring than I used to be. That said, even with my newfound confidence, I went with a simple design for my first attempt. The verdict? It was surprisingly easy to apply and I will definitely try a more challenging design soon. Have you tried a tribal design? Any tips? Please share them in the comments!

A Semblance Of Summer

Sweater: BCBG Max Azria (Nordstrom)
Top: Billtornade (Portland Boutiques Collective Sale)
Jeans: Rich & Skinny (Nordstrom)
Shoes: Sam Edelman (Piperlime)
Necklace: Marc by Marc Jacobs
Bracelets: Nordstrom and Marc by Marc Jacobs
Rings: Surface To Air (Shotwell) and Marc by Marc Jacobs
Bag: Rebecca Minkoff

Why yes that is a cashmere sweater, which could only mean one thing: summer has arrived here in San Francisco. Crisp, sunny mornings have been replaced with damp, foggy ones and I can’t say I’m thrilled about it. Though I have grown to appreciate the fog; it’s beautiful in an eerie, slightly gloomy way. Does that appreciation officially make me a San Franciscan?

It’s not easy to dress for weather I generally associate with fall (blame my New England upbringing) in the middle of summer. I want to wear sun dresses (without tights), sandals and shorts…not happening. So, I’m doing my best with light layers to maintain some semblance of the season the rest of the country is experiencing. With sandals and a little neon, I could almost forget that I was wearing a cashmere sweater…almost…

Shirt: J. Crew
Skirt: Wren (Saks)
Shoes: Pour La Victoire
Necklace: Tatty Devine (ModCloth)
Bracelet: Stella & Dot
Watch: Michael Kors (Nordstrom)
Bag: Marc by Marc Jacobs (a gift)

Could there possibly be a more perfect necklace for a Monday? I think not. And, on a particularly foggy morning that made me want to stay in bed and watch trashy TV all day, the reality of heading to work made me feel very “argh”. I knew I had to wear this necklace from the moment I accepted my fate. Ah, Mondays suck…

Feeling a bit grumpy (hence the need for the necklace), I resisted the urge to wear black and gray and instead reached for this playful skirt. I quickly decided on my go-to chambray shirt, but once I saw it put together, I remembered that I had already worn these pieces together (here). Unwilling to start over, I decided to roll up the sleeves of my shirt and call it a day. That, combined with the absence of tights, makes it a whole new outfit, right?

Lightning Bolt Manicure

Essie Cascade Cool // Sephora by OPI Queen of Everything
When I spied this manicure on Nailside, I knew I’d try it at some point though I actually didn’t intend to do so last weekend. Having learned from many manicure disasters, I decided to pass on the initial design after just one nail. I had no interest in starting the week with bare nails (gasp!), so I went with something I knew I could do. It was easy enough but I had forgotten how annoying it could be to use tape. There’s always that little bit of polish that somehow gets under the tape, resulting in slightly imperfect lines. I think next time I try this manicure I’ll free hand it instead. Do you use tape to apply designs? Any tips?

And, the winner of two bottles of Zoya nail polish is Nnenna of Star-crossed Smile! Thanks to everyone who entered and to Verve 360 Pittsburgh hair salons for partnering with me on this giveaway!

Smitten With Sweatshirts

Smitten with Sweatshirts

Sweatshirts have stuck around my closet throughout the years, and given my current obsession with this Laugh Cry Repeat sweatshirt, I think it’s safe to say they won’t be going anywhere soon. The truth is: sweatshirts have never been more chic! With graphic prints, interesting construction, and luxe embellishments, sweatshirts are no longer best left for the gym. Not sure how to wear your worn to perfection gray hoodie? I styled two looks centered on two dreamy sweatshirts that I wouldn’t mind adding to my closet…not to mention that PS1!

Short And Sweet

Jacket: Jack by BB Dakota (ModCloth)
Dress: See by Chloe (Mercantile, Portland, OR)
Tights: Betsey Johnson (ModCloth)
Shoes: Jeffrey Campbell (Nordstrom)
Necklace: BCBG
Bag: Marc Jacobs (Nordstrom Rack)
Sunglasses: Prada (a gift)

My recent move unearthed items from my closet that I had completely forgotten about. And while the pack rat in me wanted to keep it all, the reality was that I was downsizing my closet and had to pack only what I could convince myself I’d actually wear. These lace tights made the cut, even though I bought them ages ago and never quite figured out how to wear them. On a sunny Saturday, I pulled them out with determination and quickly put together this sweet look. I had always pictured them being worn with this dress; the delicate pattern and pastel colors feel worthy of lace tights. Oxfords, a chambray jacket and a collar necklace added a slightly boyish contrast to all that girly goodness.

Fishtail Manicure

Hello Kitty Blueberry // Essie Cascade Cool // Sally Hansen Mint Sorbet
Remember how I mentioned hitting the manicure inspiration jackpot when I stumbled across Chalkboard Nails? Well, I was not kidding, so it should come as no surprise that this week’s manicure was based on a tutorial I saw there. I had spotted similar designs around the internet, but almost all of the tutorials demonstrated applying the design using reinforcement stickers. Reinforcement stickers and I haven’t gotten along since my last attempt to use them, when removing the sticker resulted in removing a chunk of the polish I had just painstakingly applied. While I didn’t think free handing this design would be as easy as Sarah made it appear, I was pleasantly surprised to find that it really is easy! With no tools or tape required, this manicure is now filed under “lazy but fancy” – love it!

Pssssst, today is your last day to enter to win two bottles of Zoya polish! Get your entries in!

Tough In Pink

Jacket: Alexander McQueen for Target
T-shirt: Marc by Marc Jacobs
Skirt: Something Else by Natalie Wood (Mira Mira)
Socks: Gap
Shoes: BCBG Max Azria
Rings: Surface To Air and Gifts (from Angie)
Bracelets: Marc by Marc Jacobs (Nordstrom)
Bag: Rebecca Minkoff

This skirt has caught my eye every single time I’ve opened my closet since I dyed my hair, and I just couldn’t resist it any longer. Pink hair can come across a little sweet, and while I’ve definitely embraced that (with looks like this one), it’s fun to contradict that sweetness with tougher looks. This outfit fails somewhere in the middle. The skirt and socks are right in line with my pastel ‘do, but then there’s spikes, fangs, and a motorcycle jacket. One part saccharine and two parts “avert your eyes or I’ll kick your ass” – I love that combination!

If you haven't already, head over to this post and enter to win two bottles of polish from Zoya's new Beach & Surf Summer Collection. The giveaway closes tomorrow night!

Bag: Marc by Marc Jacobs (Nordstrom)
Sunglasses: Prada (a gift)

The weather in San Francisco has been as finicky as ever – one day I’m in a sweater, the next I’m out with bare legs. Still new to SF, I was at first dubious of those warm days that follow chilly, foggy days. Now I’ve learned to not overthink it and just take advantage, which usually involves pulling out a dress. (Let’s face it – it sucks to be sporting tights in summer!) Of course, it wasn’t warm enough to go with bare legs and bare arms, so I added this little denim blazer. I decided to play up the schoolboy vibe of the blazer with lace up oxfords, and finished it off with a few pops of red with the flower and bag. I've worn this dress quite a few times, but I think this might be my favorite way yet!

(Psssttt...be sure to enter to win two bottles of Zoya polish! The giveaway ends Friday!)
