On Dressing For Myself

Jacket: Zara
Shirt: Sparrow (Urban Outfitters)
Pants: Elevenses (Anthropologie)
Shoes: Pour La Victoire (a gift)
Bag: Marc by Marc Jacobs (a gift)
Necklace: Monserat de Lucca (ModCloth)
Bracelets: Marc by Marc Jacobs and Michael Kors (Nordstrom)
Watch: Michael Kors (Nordstrom)

When it comes to getting dressed, I'm very much a fly by the seat of my pants kinda girl. I rarely plan outfits, and when it comes to packing, I always throw in a few too many options. But there are times when I really wish that I wasn't such an emotional dresser and could just plan an outfit, wake up, and put it on without any thought. The day these photos were taken was definitely one of those days. I spent way too much time playing dress up, building a pile of beautiful clothes that I decided just weren't right for that day...but why? I had pulled out some of my favorites and still wasn't happy. And then it hit me: it was my after work plans, a blog event. Laugh; go on. I would, too. A blogger paralyzed with fear of her own kind? The irony doesn't escape me, but it also doesn't make it any less true. Don't get it twisted - I love my blog friends. Love them. But sometimes events packed with gorgeous, well-dressed, intelligent women can cause all of my insecurities to bubble to the surface. So, I looked myself in the mirror, said, "fuck it", and got a grip. Who was I trying to impress? What I wear has always been about me - how I feel, how I want to feel. And so I got dressed...for me. And you know what? Not only did I feel confident and totally me but I also snagged a few compliments from a bunch of those lovely ladies!

Bugs!

Dress: Dusen Dusen (ModCloth)
Shoes: Ego And Greed (ModCloth)
Bracelet: Marc by Marc Jacobs
Watch: Michael Kors (Nordstrom)
Sunglasses: Ray Ban (Saks)

Confession: While I adore the bug print of this dress, I really do not like actual bugs. I like to think of myself as a girl who can tough it out when it comes to less than comfortable conditions, and I can honestly say that I can tolerate bugs. And while I tolerate them, there are some bugs that the mere sight of will elicit screams of disgust. My boyfriend (and travel partner) was hesitant to respond when I asked his opinion of this dress. He just grinned and quickly asked if the print included cockroaches, which are by far the bug I despise the most. Upon careful examination, it was declared roach free and I knew it was a keeper!

Wedge Sneakers

Dress: Audrey 3 + 1 (Mira Mira)
Belt: H&M
Shoes: Marc by Marc Jacobs
Necklace: Monserat de Lucca (ModCloth)
Bracelets: A gift and Stella & Dot
Watch: Michael Kors (Nordstrom)
Bag: Mercules (ModCloth)
Sunglasses: Prada (a gift)

Let’s just talk about the shoes, because that’s what this one was all about. I snagged these shoes months ago, and to be completely honest, I started to feel guilty about not wearing them. As my boyfriend reminded me, I acted as though I couldn’t live without them. It turns out that was a little bit of an exaggeration, but his reminder did motivate me to break these beauties out of the box and plan an outfit around them. While wedge sneakers are not the easiest shoes in terms of styling, they do make up for that in comfort. This pair attracted a fair share of attention, which in a city where very few things are shocking, says a lot. An old hippie tapped me on the bus and proceeded to tell me that these were the coolest shoes he’d seen in at least fifteen years. Now that’s saying something!

Pink Lady

Sweater and Skirt: Something Else by Natalie Wood (Mira Mira)
Tank top: Michael Stars (Nordstrom Rack)
Shoes: Seychelles (ModCloth)
Bracelets: H&M
Ring: Surface To Air (Shotwell)
Bag: L.A.M.B. (Nordstrom Rack)

A monochromatic look had been on my list for a while, but I didn’t quite expect it to be so…well, pink. But, like so many of my favorite outfits, this one just happened. This skirt caught my eye during Ladies Night at Mira Mira and I almost resisted trying it on. But by the end of the night my self-control was waning, and I decided to try it on along with a few other items. Just as I was walking to the dressing room, I spied this sweater on a mannequin and grabbed that, too, knowing exactly what I’d try on first – the pink sweater with the pink skirt. I was immediately smitten and knew that, once again, I would be unable to resist the temptation of Mira Mira. To be honest, I was wearing these shoes when I tried this on and loved the color combination, so when I wore this outfit, I only had to decide on accessories. I didn’t want to compete with all that color, so I added an armful of clear bangles and a neutral clutch.  I often talk of outfits that make it impossible to be anything other than happy, and this is certainly one of them. In head to toe bright pink, what else is a girl to do but smile?

A Tempering Trench

Sleeveless trench: BR Heritage
Dress: Plenty by Tracy Reese (ModCloth)
Shoes: Sutro (Shoe Biz)
Bracelets: Marc by Marc Jacobs and a gift
Watch: Michael Kors (Nordstrom)
Bag: Marc by Marc Jacobs (a gift)
Sunglasses: Ray Ban (Saks)

Remember when I first dyed my hair red and felt hesitant when it came to straying from a select few colors? I think, by wearing this dress, I can safely say I’m over that. Back when I bought this dress, I actually decided to return it. I just didn’t think I could pull off the colors with my red hair. If I had white hair, I wouldn't have thought twice about it. But red seemed like it could be a little…too much. Content with my decision, I brought it to the office to send back, but in about ten minutes my coworkers convinced me to keep it. And so I kept it, almost challenging myself to wear it. Of course, I’ve grown into my red hair and feel much more comfortable with it now, but I still wanted to temper the colors with a neutral layer. This sleeveless trench - one of my favorite pieces from last year - was an easy choice. The khaki color felt fresh and the wrinkled fabric kept it casual. Black and gold accessories finished off this look.

Green, Green, And More Green

Sweater: Zara
Shirt: J. Crew
Pants: Gap
Shoes: Rachel Antonoff for Bass (ModCloth)
Bag: The Cambridge Satchel Company (ModCloth)
Sunglasses: Prada (a gift)

Some days, I wake up knowing exactly what I want to wear that day. Other days, I know how I want to feel and dress the part. On this day, I had just one mission: work in a little green to show my support of my beloved Celtics, who were playing later that day. It seems that mission quickly morphed into wearing as much green as possible. I started with the pants, and then decided on the striped green sweater. I fully intended to stop there, but as I perused my bags, I couldn’t resist the lure of more green in the form of this satchel. I may have gone a bit overboard (I got quite a few odd glances), but did my Celtics win that night? Yes, they did!

A Sophisticated Sweatshirt

Sweatshirt: Laugh Cry Repeat (Mira Mira)
Shirt: Alexa Chung for Madewell
Jeans: Levis (Urban Outfitters)
Shoes: Nine West
Rings: Surface To Air (Shotwell) and ModCloth
Bag: Marc by Marc Jacobs (a gift)
Sunglasses: Ray Ban (Saks)

I might be a little bit obsessed with oxfords and sweatshirts. Sweatshirts – even those with giant sequins hearts – are surprisingly versatile when it comes to layering. Last time I wore this one over a sheer blush button down with distressed denim and wedges. It was the perfect outfit for a lazy Sunday brunch, but this time I wanted to make the sweatshirt feel a bit more refined, a bit more work appropriate. My first step was black skinnies – casual but always chic. When it came time to choose a button down, I debated a few options before deciding on this silk one. The print is subtle but playful, a perfect complement to the sweatshirt (which is blatant and playful). For a bit of color I added a bag with neon accents and finished it off with a pair of pointy toe black heels. They always seem to add a touch of sophistication to any look, don’t they?

Toughen Up

Shirt: H&M
Lace Bra: ModCloth

Sunglasses: Ray Ban (Saks)

The weather has been especially indecisive lately with days that feel like summer (“summer” in San Francisco being high seventies and no wind) followed by the standard mid-sixties and windy weather. I’ve learned to take advantage of warmer weather when I can, shedding my usual layers and pulling out spring clothes. On this particularly warm day, I combined two of my favorite spring trends: floral denim and a sheer top. I’ve worn these jeans many times before, but I’ve generally stuck to tops and sweaters in soft colors. Paired with black, they feel a bit tougher, and the sheer top with just a peek of the lace bra and menswear inspired shoes, this look almost feels a little 90’s…and I like it.

Gingham Manicure

Sally Hansen Hard As Nails Lacey Lilac // Nails Inc. Haymarket // Kiss Brush On Nail Art Paint White

I got the idea for a gingham accent nail from this post over on The Beauty Department. I considered DIY stickers as shown in the tutorial, but feeling confident after my leopard manicure, I decided to draw the lines to create the gingham pattern. I used a white striping paint, and it was surprisingly easy. I acknowledge that for this to be true gingham, it would be white with a purple pattern. I just hate white polish. I find it rather unforgiving when it comes to imperfections, but next time (oh yes, there will most definitely be a next time) I might have to give it a try. Do you have any tips about white polish? Or maybe a favorite white polish?

Neon Stripes

Sweater: POL (ModCloth)
Jeans: Rich & Skinny (Nordstrom)
Shoes: Jeffrey Campbell (Jeremy’s)
Bracelets: Voz Clothing & Art (Renegade Craft Fair)
Bag: The Cambridge Satchel Company (ModCloth)
Sunglasses: Prada (a gift)

This is just an easy Monday outfit. I can be a bit lazy on Monday mornings. I find myself doing anything but getting ready; instead I’ll sneak in a little reading while I sip on my coffee (I’m almost finished with Catching Fire) or spend way too long playing with Sombrita. Once I resign myself to the fact that the weekend is over and I am going to work, it’s way too late to spend much time considering what to wear. And I also tend to go with something comfortable on Mondays…you know, to ease my way into the week. An oversized sweater and boyfriend jeans are perfect Monday attire, and as usual, I threw on heels to make myself feel not so lazy. Is there a day of the week when you feel a bit lazy about putting together a look?

Just Jeans And A Tee

Jacket: Zara
T-shirt: StyleMint (via a giveaway from Maria of Kitties + Couture)
Jeans: Levis (DIY distressing)
Shoes: Chanel (Jeremy’s)
Necklace: H&M
Bracelets: Marc by Marc Jacobs and H&M
Watch: Michael Kors (Nordstrom)
Bag: Marc by Marc Jacobs (Nordstrom)

It’s no secret that I’m a big fan of a good t-shirt, so when I won Maria’s StyleMint giveaway, I knew exactly what I’d get – a white t-shirt. I was curious about StyleMint and excited to get my hands on my tee. For years I’ve been married to James Perse and had been looking for a quality tee at a lower price point. While I love white t-shirts, I just can’t keep from staining them…often on the first wear. Replacing them can get a bit spendy, so I’ve learned a t-shirt splurge is best saved for one in a darker (read: more stain resistant) color. But, back to this t-shirt – I love it. I wore it for days after I received it.

While white t-shirts can really do no wrong and can be worn with absolutely anything, there are few things I love more than just jeans and tee. Easy. Classic. Distressed denim, a white tee, and a pair of Chanel flats? It might be simple, but it’s definitely one of my favorites.
