More Cats, More Fun

There are some things that I just can’t resist, like dresses with pockets, pizza, fabulous heels, a glass of champagne, cat prints – you see where I’m going. When I saw this top, I knew it had to be mine. And once I got it, I knew I had to wear it with this necklace, because like any true crazy, cat lady, I know that more cats just mean more fun. This kitty combination made me smile all day, but I do regret not taking outfit photos with my cats.

With a billowy shape and cinched waist, skinny jeans were the obvious choice to wear with this top. This cropped pair was perfect for showing off these pretty suede heels. (How cute are they?) Speaking of these shoes, the first time I wore them was agony. By the end of the day I felt like I couldn’t fully extend a few of my toes. Tell me you’ve been there. After stopping at my apartment before heading out for dinner, I decided to throw on a pair peds, and much to my delight, the shoes were instantly comfortable! Since they always seem to be peeking out, I’m on the hunt for some cute ones – maybe lace or a subtle print. Do you have any pain relieving shoe tips? Let me know!

With the sudden appearance of summer here in San Francisco, I’ve been trying to take full advantage by wearing some of my favorite dresses. Not that this dress only works for summer (definitely not, I wear it all year) but there’s something about wearing it alone that highlights just how awesome it is. I love everything about this dress – the print, the shape, the pockets – and I’m actually surprised that I haven’t already showed it off here on the blog. These shoes are a recent purchase, and I am a little obsessed with them. Paired with this dress (and a heavy dose of sunshine), I was waaaaaay too happy this day. Don’t you love it when an outfit does that?

Stripes And A Trench

A funny thing happened recently: I met a lovely reader of Style by Santina (Hi, Jesica!), who mentioned that a recent outfit seemed way too warm for the rather late (but very welcomed) summer that has hit San Francisco. I laughed and confessed that I’m generally a week behind in my posts, so this outfit is from the very start of what felt like actual summer weather.

A bit dubious of the weather report, I was reluctant to give up my layers. I paired this striped dress with my sleeveless trench, and while it turned out to be warm enough to go without it, I was more than happy to keep it on after a big brunch accompanied by a few Micheladas. (Maybe I should have considered my food baby when I chose horizontal stripes.) I kept the rest of the look simple, adding gold accessories, a patent bag and nude wedges.

A Little Glitter

Sephora by OPI Havana Dreams // Sephore by OPI Spark-tacular!

Let me start by apologizing for skipping my nails post last week. It’s not that my nails were bare for a week - those ombre nails just did not chip! I actually did go a day without polish, because my first attempt at a manicure ended with polish remover followed by a glass of wine. What? I hate wasting time, and I don’t know about you, but it takes me forever to paint my nails! Anyhow, I could only make it one day without polish. I felt naked without it. When did this happen? On my second attempt, I went with a rather simple manicure: a pale blue and a multicolor glitter on one finger.

The decision to use Harry Potter And The Order Of The Phoenix in the photos was last minute. It’s not that I think of these as my Harry Potter nails, but I do think of this ring as my Harry Potter ring (which is exactly why I love it). And, the cover of this particular book was perfect with my blue nails.

The Obvious Choice

Jacket: Urban Outfitters
Dress: Betsey Johnson
Belt: H&M
Brooch: Vintage
Shoes: Jeffrey Campbell (Jeremy’s)
Bag: Marc by Marc Jacobs (Nordstrom)
Sunglasses: Michael Kors (Nordstrom)

So, I know I’ve faked it recently, but this time it was actually warm enough to be wearing this – summer is finally here! And, ever since, deciding what to wear has been a challenge. This is my last chance to wear some of my favorite summer clothes. Well, maybe not the last time but at least the last time without tights and layers. Since I planned to check out the opening of the new Betsey Johnson store later in the day, my choice was easy – something Betsey. I have two dresses, but this one is by far my favorite of the two (last seen here). I layered this military jacket over it, rolled up the sleeves and then belted it. I debated a few necklaces before this vintage brooch caught my eye. I bought it a few months back at the Alameda Flea Market with Eli. It feels like such a happy piece, and if there is anything the Betsey girl is, it’s happy.

By the time I arrived at the store opening, there was a much larger crowd than I expected though it looked exactly as I expected – drenched in pink and tulle galore! I watched as Betsey spray painted the wall outside the new store but left shortly after she went inside, and I wish I had stayed a bit longer to get a few better shots. Skinnies And Sunshine

Top: ModCloth

Jeans: Levi’s (Urban Outfitters)
Shoes: Ego And Greed (ModCloth)

I keep my closet arranged in sections: pants, dresses, long sleeve shirts, short sleeve shirts, jackets, etc. all arranged by color. As I looked through my long sleeve shirts section, which previously would have accurately been described as my “cotton button downs” section, I noticed that there were more sheer shirts than I recall buying. It seems I’ve unknowingly been on a binge for anything sheer, but it’s not really surprising. They’re a perfect way to add a feminine touch to the boyish looks I love so much, and it’s also an easy way to mix textures. With fall on its way, I look forward to layering sheer tops under chunky knits and wool blazers.

On this not quite summer but not yet fall day, I layered this sheer tunic over a tank and black skinnies rolled up to show off what has quickly become a favorite pair of shoes. With such a neutral outfit, I couldn't resist adding a pop of color and I absolutely adore this poppy colored bag paired with camel.

I’ve been wearing a lot of prints lately – polka dots, Dalmatian spots, and even running impala – but not as many stripes as I normally do. To fix that, I layered stripes in bold colors for a cheerful, casual look. Buttoned all the way up and paired with boyfriend jeans this look had a bit of that boyish vibe I love so much, but super high wedges and gold accessories definitely kept it feminine.

It’s not often that you’ll hear me say this, but I’m almost looking forward to cooler weather. I know, I know; I’m constantly complaining about San Francisco’s “summer” and now here I am saying I want it to be even cooler. I can’t help it; this taste of layering reminded me how much I love fall. And after nearly a year of warm weather, I’m ready for a bit of change. I’m also more than ready to wear some new additions to my fall wardrobe.

When I stop and think about it, I’m still amazed that just a few months ago I was living in a small beach town in Mexico. It seems that I’ve silently slipped back into a city life without really acknowledging it. I used to spend my mornings sipping coffee in my outdoor living room, pondering the most challenging question I’d face that day: which bikini should I wear? (Tough life, I know.) Now I sip my coffee while staring into my massive closet in an apartment on the ninth floor, getting ready for a day in an office. Crazy, right?

As I stood in front of my closet on this particular morning, I had no idea what to wear. I wanted to take advantage of a forecast for warmer temperatures but wasn’t about to let myself be fooled (yet again) into thinking it would actually be warm. (Not so long ago, what is now a “warm” day would have brought out winter clothes.) Rather than layer a cardigan over this dress, I added my go-to white button down, buttoned it all the way up and then tied it up. With chunky platforms and a statement necklace, I felt rather ladylike much like the last time I wore this dress.

Tomboy

I like to put on a pretty dress just as much as the next girl, but when it really comes down to it, I’m a tomboy at heart, always have been and always will be. When other girls my age were obsessed with Barbies and Cabbage Patch Kids, I was playing with Transformers and GI Joes. By the time I got to high school, I was far more interested in field hockey than fashion. And college…well, we just won’t go there. Even now I often find myself admiring a random guy’s suit while on the bus, thinking how amazing it would look on a woman.

I wore this last weekend, and it’s just the kind of outfit that is so easy to me - boyfriend jeans and an oversized button down (often borrowed from the boyfriend though not this time). I’ve done it a million times (like here and here) but I play around with accessories to keep it interesting (or so I hope). This time I went with a sparkly bow tie necklace and socks with an adorable heart print.

Warm Thoughts And An Irresistible Dress

Do I look like I was freezing while taking these pics? I definitely was. San Francisco’s temperamental weather sure has a way of messing with outfit photos. When I left work, the sun was shining and it was mid-70’s. (Funny to think that about six months ago I would have been freezing at the thought of mid-70’s.) Sunglasses on, jacket off, I basked in the sun while waiting for the bus. Twenty minutes later I stepped off the bus and into the fog and wind…I was not happy. Determined to still get outfit photos that at least made it appear as though summer was here, I bravely peeled off my jacket and thought warm thoughts. Did it work?

This dress was yet another purchase from Erin’s visit, and I couldn’t wait to wear it. A dress with an easy silhouette, a geometric print and pockets is simply not something I can pass up. And while I have little hope of wearing this without layers again any time soon, I do look forward to wearing it with a chunky cardigan, tights, and boots. Are you already thinking about how to transition some of your favorite summer buys into fall?

Fashion's Night Out SF

Tights: DKNY (Nordstrom Rack)
Shoes: BCBGirls (Nordstrom)
Necklace: Sloane Boutique, Portland, OR
Ring: Surface To Air (Shotwell)
Bag: L.A.M.B. (Nordstrom Rack)

Whew, Fashion’s Night Out was fun but exhausting - too many fun events and not enough time! I kicked off the evening with a champagne toast at Neiman Marcus with some bloggers I always look forward to seeing as well as some ladies I had yet to meet. After that I headed to Vince with Angie, Elisabeth, and Eli. Becca met us there before we popped into Marc Jacobs and finally Saks. After all the champagne, we decided it would be wise to grab a bite to eat before heading home with aching feet.

As for what I wore, it was an easy choice. I had been dying to wear my Karl Lagerfeld for Macy’s faux leather shorts and what better occasion? I was thrilled to have scored a pair when I attended a preview party the night before the collection was released. I paired them with a super sweet top and a sparkly bow tie necklace. I can’t wait to wear these shorts again – I love them!

A big thank you to Lindsay and Caitlin for hosting the blogger toast and to Neiman Marcus, Marc Jacobs, Saks Fifth Avenue, Vince, DODO case, Rex Ray, Pop Chips, and Gilt City for sponsoring the fun events!
