Chambray And Stripes

Shirt: Trouvé (Nordstrom)
Skirt: Forever 21
Belt: Forever 21 (came with skirt)
Shoes: DV (Nordstrom Rack)
Necklace: Betsey Johnson
Bracelet: Anthropologie
Sunglasses: Ray Ban (Saks)
Bag: Coach (Nordstrom)

Over and over again while in Mexico, I wished I had brought this chambray shirt; it really would have helped stretch my limited wardrobe. I was at least smart enough to tuck away all those possible outfits into the imaginary closet in my mind, and on a day when I was feeling a little bit frazzled, I was so happy I did.

Once I decided on the shirt, at least three outfits popped into mind, all involving skirts. I spied this one sitting on top of the laundry basket, just waiting to be put away. Don’t you just love it when it pays to be lazy? With such an oversized top, I had only two real options: belt it or tie it up. It looked cute tied up, but it also exposed a belt loop that needs to be sewn. Since I have yet to unpack my sewing kit, I decided to belt it. (Maybe I spoke too soon about being lazy.) Playful accessories, wedges and my black Ray Bans finished off this look.

What’s the item that helps you make the most of your wardrobe?

Irresistible Elbow Patches

Sweater: Zara
Jeans: Rich & Skinny (Nordstrom)
Belt: Forever 21
Shoes: Franco Sarto (Nordstrom)
Necklace: Marc by Marc Jacobs (Nordstrom)
Bag: Marc by Marc Jacobs (Marc by Marc, Boston)
Sunglasses: Ray Ban (borrowed from my boyfriend)

This sweater is a recent purchase; I bought it on the same trip to Zara as the blue pants. I’ll admit that my thought process was rather primitive. It went something like this: “Ooohhh, stripes…” and then I picked up the sweater, revealing elbow patches. “Ooohhh, elbow patches”. Done.

Putting together an outfit around it didn't require much more thought. Boyfriend jeans seemed to fit the preppy vibe of the elbow patches, and bright accessories kept it feminine. This outfit was perfectly comfortable for a windy but sunny afternoon spent wandering around with my boyfriend. (And believe me; after I ate what was maybe the largest wet burrito ever, I was thankful that I skipped the skinnies and went with a roomier fit!)

Stripes And A Smile

Jacket: Alexander McQueen for Target
Shirt: BCBG Max Azria
Skirt: Zara
Shoes: BCBG Max Azria
Necklace: Adia Kibur (Gilt)
Bag: See by Chloe (a gift)
Scarf: Zac Posen for Target
Sunglasses: Marc by Marc Jacobs (Marc by Marc, San Francisco)

You know those days when you wake up, get dressed, and just absolutely love what you have on all day? This was one of those days thanks to a bunch of favorites, old and new ones alike, put together into an outfit that is very true to me. Any time black and white stripes are paired with a pop of color, I’m a happy girl. Layer on one of my favorite jackets, a statement necklace, and a gorgeous, sunny San Francisco day? Yeah, I was smiling all day.

My Happy Dress

Dress: Betsey Johnson
Shoes: Coach (Nordstrom Rack)
Bag: Louis Vuitton (Vintage)
Sunglasses: Michael Kors (Nordstrom)

I know everyone calls Chicago “the windy city”, but I think San Francisco might be trying to steal that moniker. There’s no other explanation for the ever-present wind. What’s that? Oh, I guess you could be right. Maybe it does have something to do with this city’s proximity to (frigid) water. Maybe. I do know that my hair just isn’t cute when it’s blowing around in the wind (which apparently makes me either grimace or laugh uncontrollably) so there weren’t many photos to chose from this day. I blame the wind.

This dress is one of my favorites. There is no option for a bad mood in a dress like this; I’m instantly happy when I put it on. The vibrant color and crocheted layer feel playful and carefree, and really, who couldn’t use a little more of that in life? I paired it with equally bright pink flats, a vintage bag and a pair of oversized sunglasses. I considered loading on the accessories, but in the end I decided on none. Some dresses just don’t need accessories. Do you have anything that you prefer to wear without layers of necklaces, bangles or rings?

Sunshiny Lace

Cardigan: Rodarte for Target
Shirt: Gap
Jeans: Rich & Skinny (Nordstrom)
Shoes: Sam Edelman (Nordstrom)
Bag: Marc by Marc Jacobs (Marc by Marc, Boston)
Sunglasses: Michael Kors (Nordstrom)

It seems my feet don’t share my renewed enthusiasm for heels. While I had hoped nine months of nothing but flats and sandals would rejuvenate my feet, it turns out they’re just out of shape. So, I gave ‘em a break and wore flats. I didn't want to, but I had to.

Shoe choice explained, let’s talk about this lace cardigan. After pulling it out of storage, tags still attached, I was determined to wear it soon. It’s not that I don’t like this cardigan; I just think the color was a poor choice for me when I bought it. Let’s think back to my Portland days…I don’t know about you, but all I see is white. Pale as can be and with a white bowl cut, this color was just not flattering, but with darker hair and a tan, I quite like the color. And since light layers seem to be the only way to stay prepared for San Francisco’s finicky weather, I see myself wearing it a lot (or at least until the tan fades). Do you have anything that you hung onto for a while before wearing or are you more the type who buys something and wears it the very next day?

The Smurf Pants

Shirt: Sparrow (Urban Outfitters)
Pants: Zara
Shoes: Nine West
Bag: L.A.M.B. (Nordstrom Rack)
Necklace: Sloan Boutique (Portland, OR)
Bracelets: Marc by Marc Jacobs and Nordstrom

I knew it was going to happen sooner or later, and while I had hoped it would be a bit later, I think I did just fine all things considered. I mean, I shopped just once during the whole nine months I was in Mexico, and even though I don’t have a job yet, a girl deserves a treat every now and again, doesn’t she? I had walked past Zara too many times not to go in, and having never shopped there, I was pleased to find that, as expected, I pretty much wanted everything in the store. These blue pants, to which my boyfriend playfully referred as my “Smurf pants”, have been on my wishlist for quite some time. I love them. I had to have them.

I also had to wear them the very next day for dinner and drinks with Becca and Eli. I came up with a bunch of options, but this laidback button down won out. It brought just the right amount of boyish charm, which I played up a little more with a bow tie necklace. A few bangles, my foldover clutch (I really missed this bag), and a go-to pair of pointed toe heels finished off this look. I have to admit, I really like this outfit. It feels good to play dress up again.

Oh, hi. Remember me? I know; it’s been a while. Two weeks…what a difference two weeks make. I said goodbye to Mexico, and hello to San Francisco. And then I said hello to the stress of searching for an apartment while living in a hotel room with two cats and a longboard. It wasn’t fun, but after a series of real estate letdowns, the boyfriend and I found an apartment and moved right in. Since then my days have been spent combing the internet for jobs, slowly unpacking, exploring my new city, playing Tetris, and eating a lot of pizza.

I decided this was the day to return to outfit photos mostly because it was the warmest day since I arrived. Not yet fully unpacked, these shorts were right on top of one of my bags, begging to finally be worn with a pair of wedges. (And, when I say, “not yet fully unpacked”, I’m not referring to my shoes, of course; they’re all unpacked.) There were so many options, but in the end I thought this pair of peep toe wedges were a perfect match for such feminine shorts. A black scoop neck and denim blazer were just right for a warm but windy day, and when it came time to choose a bag, this poppy one was the only choice.

Hey guys! As you likely know by now, I left Mexico after nine sunny months and am now in San Francisco - talk about a drastic change! Finding an apartment and job can be a bit stressful, so I am ever so relieved to have some amazing guest posts lined up to keep you entertained over here on Style by Santina. Please give these ladies a warm welcome, and if you like what you see here, be sure to click through and check out their blogs!

Hi readers of Style by Santina! I'm Clare of Between Laundry Days, and I'm thrilled to be sharing a post with you while Santina transitions back to life in the U.S. One thing I love about reading Santina's blog is hearing about her fabulously laid-back lifestyle in Mexico. While Chicago is no sleepy beach town, it does know how to keep things awesome in the summertime, so I thought I'd share a post on how I spent my Memorial Day weekend in the city.

Drinking Jarritos in the park with a fabulous view of the city and wiggling my toes in the fresh spring grass.

Reading The Name of the Rose and admiring the twinsies sunbathers soaking up the first truly hot day of the year (aren't these two hilarious?!).

Transitioning downtown for picnic #2 at Millennium Park. Free outdoor concerts all summer, and you don't even have to hide your wine!

Finishing up the cheese and wine, appreciating being able to go shoeless almost all weekend, and taking in spectacular views of the city as the sun sets behind the skyscrapers.

Okay team, that's my long holiday weekend in the city! I hope you enjoyed the post. Thanks to Santina, of course, for inviting me to guest post. I can't wait to keep reading as she transitions back into city life (though I'll miss those spectacular beach photos!!).

Hola! I’m Kate from Clumsy Fox, and not only am I happy to be visiting here at Style by Santina, I am also thrilled that Santina will soon be living much, much closer to my home-base of Portland, Oregon. It’s also exciting to do an outfit post, which I never do over at Clumsy Fox—it’s always fun to try new things, no?

I have to start with the shoes, because I knew as soon as Santina asked me to do a quick post that I would be wearing these platform oxfords. As you are all well aware, Santina loves her sky-high heels and these are taller than my usual heel choice, but they still exude a bit of that “grandma-chic,” which I love.

Since the shoes are a nude tone, I wanted to pair them with some bright colors. I’ve been falling in love with yellow this season, and since it was actually warm and sunny (so rare for Portland, even in May!) I immediately grabbed this yellow sundress, which I recently snagged for under $20. But since yellow is still a potentially neutral color, I made sure to add a quick splash of hot pink with the belt. (I learned from the best—I’m sure you all know how Santina loves those pops of color!)

Since the strapless dress shows the tattoo on my chest, I decided to keep the accessories to a minimum; I have come to think of tattoos not only as awesome forms of art, but as permanent accessories as well—and I do love me some accessories. (I’m sure Santina will back me up on this one.)

Thanks again to Santina for having me visit—I can’t wait to see how her style changes yet again in a brand new city!

Today I am filling in for the lovely Santina while she settles into her life back in the States. Hope you enjoy it!

Blogging has changed my life completely. I have started taking more risks, becoming much more experimental and open to new things. One of the things I was wary of was - thrifting! Up until I started blogging I couldn’t imagine wearing 'secondhand clothes' or even entering a thrift shop in my dreams! Not much has changed yet, but after being encouraged by a lot of blogging friends, I did brave-through into a thrift store last year! I had no idea what I was looking for or how one thrifts ‘successfully’. So if you are someone like me who is a thrift virgin then this is what I have learned so far:

1) Take your time and survey the store. Pick out stuff you think you might like. If you are lucky you might even find stuff with their original tags on.
2) If you are not ready to start with clothes immediately, accessories like jewelry and belts are a great way to break the ice.
3) Make sure you try on everything.
4) Check for any wear and tear. If it is easily repairable then don’t just discard it!
5) Lastly, and most importantly wash everything before wearing.

Below are few of the items I have thirfted!

Reversible Belt - (Front Side - Printed) - $5.00
Reversible Belt (Back Side - Polka Dots) - $5.00
Bright Green Belt via J.Crew - $3.00
Bright & Skinny Orange Belt via J.Crew - $3.00
Belt via Coach - $10.00
Vest via Banana Republic - $10.00

Do not underestimate the power of thrifting, my friends! :)
